FONDUE: THE REAL STORY…SORT OF.

A long long time ago, in a land called Switzer, there came a necessity, an idea, a “MacGyver Moment” as it were.  It was the end of winter, food provisions were low, the Swiss, or as the French like to call them Smerfs, We’re  hungry and there was little left to eat. All they had was hard cheese and old bread, and fortunately wine. Probably after a couple glasses of wine, and empty stomach and a dare, they heated up the cheese, added some wine for good luck then dunked the bread hoping for the best or at least, a good story to tell next winter. Just like MacGyver, they solved their dilemma in just under an hour with what they call now “fondue”. I’m pretty sure in Swiss, fondue means “it’s about time!” but we’ll go with Wikipedia’s version which says it’s a French word which means melt or blend.  Luckily for the Swiss, they did both, combining cheese and wine. Much to the chagrin of the French,” Fondue” was their word, not the Smerfs, I mean Swiss but they were good sports because they love their wine & cheese more than words…

Fondue comes in many forms. From cheese to broth to chocolate.  It is a wonderful way to gather good food, good wine and good friends. Why don’t you give a try tonight and know what the French meant by “joie de vivre!” (the joy of life).
